What is Naturopathic Medicine?
Naturopathic Medicine is primary health care that focuses on disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment using natural therapies. These therapies can include acupuncture, herbal medicine, clinical nutrition, homeopathy and lifestyle modifications. Naturopathic Doctors treat a variety of acute and chronic conditions.
The primary goal of Naturopathic treatment is to address the cause of illness, rather than suppress the symptoms. The patient is seen as a whole person. The Naturopathic Doctor takes the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions into account when diagnosing and developing a treatment plan.
How are Naturopathic Doctors trained?
Naturopathic Doctors are highly educated, well trained, registered practitioners. They have attained a minimum of three years of university studies, followed by four years at an accredited College of Naturopathic Medicine. The education encompasses medical sciences, naturopathic principles and therapeutics, and 1500 hours of supervised clinical experience.
Is Naturopathic Medicine covered by OHIP?
Unfortunately, naturopathic medicine is not covered by OHIP. However, naturopathic services are covered by many extended health benefits plans. Check with your insurance provider for information about your coverage. Also, our services are considered a medical expenses for income tax purposes.
What is a visit like?
Your first visit will be approximately 60 minutes in length. In that time, we will go over an in-depth history of your health concerns, medical history, family history, physical examination, and get you started on a path to address your health concerns. Any laboratory testing needed may be ordered on that visit. Follow-up visits are 30 minutes in length, where we review your progress and make any needed adjustments to your treatment plan.
